Welcome to:                            Guyana - ' Land of many Waters '

The ancient Amerindian (Guyana's indigenous people) word meaning land of many waters gave rise to the modern name 'Guyana'. To date Guyana remains rich and fertile through its vast and untamed water ways which preserve the tropical rainforests that occupy approximately 75% of the land.

The waters of this 'El Dorado' is honored on the country's Coat of Arms by three wavy blue lines. The naturally rich, dark, 'sweet' waters of Guyana display vast flora and fauna including the National Flower - the Victoria Regia Lily (Victoria amazonica)- the largest lily in the world (also featured on the Coat of Arms) and the legendary Arapaima (largest fresh water fish in the world).

Guyana's water ways are also studded with many beautiful waterfalls; the most famous one is off the Potaro river - Kaiteur - a majestic, single drop thought to be the world's highest.

Guarding Guyana's southern border are the famous mountain ranges, the most notable being the Kanuku and Pakarima mountains that boast a variety of ecosystems untouched. Guyana's highest point is Mt. Rorima, a vast and untouched plateau preserved due to its dangerous cliffs and fierce inaccessibility by land.
