Year I
This being
the first year of the MBBS program, takes a bit of adjustment. Medicine
is quite different form other fields, it takes commitment and a keen
sense of scheduling. Year I is taught at the School of Medicine, located in
the Faculty of Health Sciences, Turkeyen Campus, UG. Semesters:
2 (19 weeks each) Courses:
Morphological and Biomedical Sciences and FHS Core Courses. Credits:

Anatomy |
|
There are 3
semesters of Anatomy; 2 being Gross Anatomy (in year I). The
course is well defined and has some lectures and many variant
laboratory practices. Students
get to learn and appreciate the complexities of the human
structure and function, to better understand how to treat their
patients, and how to gain a better handle on surgery.
An External Oral Examination
(EOE) follows the third semester of Anatomy.

|
|
Biochemistry |
|
A one year course (of 2 semesters). First semester
is worth 4 credits and the second 5 credits. At the end of the second
semester there is an EOE.
The course consists of lectures, labs.
and oral presentations by students. Focus has always been on up to date information and the
original biochemical concepts of medicine.

|
|
Histology |
|
One year (2 semesters, 3 credits
each).
Microscopic analysis
of body tissues with theoretical discussions helps to lay the foundation
to create perspectives into the vast fields of diagnosis and
management of conditions, and in creating appreciation for
histopathology.

|
|
Physiology |
|
Two semesters (1 year). Physiology I (4
credits) studies fluid systems, muscular systems and general physiology.
Physiology II (5 credits) considers the bodily systems and their
physiology( that is their medical function).
Combined, these semesters give vital
backing to physical diagnosis, pharmaco-therapeutics and over all
better management of various conditions necessary for proper patient
care. There is an EOE at the end of the second semester.

|
|
National Health
Systems |
|
Only 2 credits, this course examines health
concepts and health systems (1 semester).
Designed to give a
better understanding of health systems and health care delivery.
This course is one of the few FHS Core courses for medical
students.

Health
Promotion & Education
|
|
A course designed
to educate budding health professionals brings logics and
essentials to medical teaching methods and communication
(especially lectures and presentations) to allow all levels of
education access to your knowledge. 3
credits but filled with knowledge. (FHS Core Course) |
|
|
Language Skills |
| As
language communicates our thoughts and work, it is essential to
have a proper and functional master of the English
Language.
ENG 115 and ENG 123 seek to
accomplish this need for all students within the University of
Guyana. |
