National Symbols

The Golden Arrow Head is Guyana's National Flag. It has five colours: green, white, gold, black and red. The green symbolises the agricultural and forested nature of Guyana; the white represents the rivers and water ways; the golden arrow represents Guyana's mineral wealth and its forward thrust; the black border salutes the endurance that will sustain the thrust of the people; and the red triangle is dedicated to the zeal and dynamic nature of nation building.

The Coat of Arms also depicted at the top left of this page is topped by an Amerindian head-dress giving recognition to the Amerindians as the indigenous people of the country; the two diamonds at either sides of the head-dress represents the country's mining industry; the helmet is the symbol of the British monarchy; the two jaguars holding a pick-axe, a sugarcane and stalk of rice, symbolise labour and the two main agricultural industries - sugar and rice; th shield decorated with the national flower- Victoria regia Lily - protects the nation; the three wavy blue lines represent the many waters of Guyana, and the Canjie Pheasant, the national bird is a rare brid found principally in this part of the world.
